Great Lakes Greenhouses (GLG), established in 1983 in Leamington, Ontario, Canada, began on just five acres of land. Today, it stands as one of North America's largest cucumber producers while remaining a family-owned business committed to continuous improvement.
As a pioneer in the greenhouse industry, GLG has achieved several significant milestones, including:
• In-house cucumber propagation from seed to ensure superior disease control and quality
• The use of CO2 to optimize the greenhouse atmosphere
• On-site plant grafting to enhance disease resistance
• Year-round production of cucumbers and mini cucumbers
• Large-scale breeding and harvesting of beneficial insects to support natural pest control
GLG operates with a strong commitment to sustainability, including being fully off the grid:
• All electricity is generated in-house through an efficient co-generation system powered by natural gas.
• The system produces over 5.5 megawatts of energy, which powers GLG’s advanced growing processes using LED technology.
• Heat recovery from modern boilers is used to warm a portion of the greenhouses, reducing the overall carbon footprint.
• Water used throughout operations is purified and recycled.
GLG is also dedicated to holistic farming practices, including enriching soil with nutrients from animal compost and vegetable sources to support future crops. The company actively fosters sustainable pest control by cultivating beneficial insects on-site, including bee colonies for natural pollination. These insects help manage pests and reduce the need for pesticides.
All produce grown at GLG is certified non-GMO, with organic products meeting USDA Organic, Pro-Cert, and ECOCERT standards.
At GLG, we value strong relationships with our partners. We offer:
• Organic produce that is 12 to 24 hours fresher than traditional supply channels
• Competitive pricing by selling directly from the farm
• High food safety standards
• Custom and private label packaging options to meet specific merchandising needs
With a focus on innovation, sustainability, and quality, GLG continues to lead the way in greenhouse agriculture.
